La Grande Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk Of Cognitive Decline, Osteoporosis & Fracture Risk

At the mention of the Mediterranean, what comes to mind? Postcard-worthy images of gorgeous blue ocean waters, white sane beaches, cloudless blue skies…and food? Yes, food! Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC shares nutrition tips, and the Mediterranean diet is talked up around the nutrition world for its multiple health benefits as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are good for all of us in our La Grande chiropractic family!

BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET

With the growing recognition that diet plays a beneficial role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being created. A recent paper with suggestions for guidelines recommended a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver calcium and protein adequate enough to preserve normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are linked to a reduced risk of fracture. (1) In other studies, the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture risk. Another recent paper explains that there is indication that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also reduce hip fracture risk in addition to threat of lumbar spine osteoporosis in females. (2) A study just released this past month pointed out that older adults who followed the Meditterranean Diet more strictly had reduced odds of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, lower osteoporosis odds, lower risk of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to check out and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC finds these new studies quite interesting to share with our La Grande chiropractic patients and their families.

WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?

Good stuff! Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It proposes avoiding sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
