Knees and knee pain. Boy, do we work our knees…or at least
we should! Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC hears about painful knees nearly
as often as we hear about painful backs and necks! La Grande
knee pain sufferers know the symptoms and feel the same: “I don’t want knee pain!” Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC
has some enlightening new research on exercise, chiropractic care,
and nutrition to keep knee pain in check.
EXERCISE PROTECTS THE KNEES
If you have La Grande knee pain, moving
may seem like it will only aggravate
it more. Many doctors like yours at Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC and researchers have
heard that! That’s fear. Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC gets it!
Physical activity is good for your knee’s overall health though. Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC
will be right beside you to calm your fear and make
sure movement helps! Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC also
will tell you again that a sedentary lifestyle may cause more
issues and likely end in more joint health problems.
A study that tracked people for 8 years found
that persistent sitting was not related to
knee osteoarthritis and low to moderate level of strenuous
physical activity is protective against knee osteoarthritis. If you sit a lot, exercise, too. It is beneficial. The authors specifically state
that long-term strenuous activity participation did not raise
the incidence of knee osteoarthritis. That is good news! They write
cautiously that people who were older, have a higher BMI,
more severe pain, weaker quadriceps and depression were less
likely to do any strenuous activities. (1) If that’s you, let
us together get past these issues for your knees’ sake! Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC
is a fabulous La Grande health partner!
QUADRICEPS HELPS THE KNEES
And talk about good partners, quads are to knees! Knees need strong quadriceps. Exercising the quadriceps is smart! A study evaluated
younger and older folks doing resistance exercises via machine
vs. elastic band. Both work! Maximal voluntary contraction of the
knee extensors in older folks is higher than that in younger
people. Exercise may help the older folks develop
that muscle so it can persist longer and potentially reduce
the muscle loss that normally comes with aging. (2)
Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC can guide you toward stronger quads!
COORDINATE KNEES AND LIMBS
Have you heard of patellofemoral pain syndrome? It’s a term for a most common musculoskeletal
disorder that finds atypical motor coordination of the limbs
which loads the knees unevenly, raising
their risk of pain. (3) Knowing this
helps your La Grande chiropractor guide treatment
and exercise to help coordinate motion. One approach
toward improvement is resistance training whose
effectiveness can really be noticed in hopping. Researchers
found that hopping requires strong ankles and knees that work together
well. Resistance training increases strength and coordination benefiting
knees and ankles.
(4) Do not let the child in you start hopping just yet!
