La Grande Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

What do stiff, noisy, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! La Grande knee pain sufferers experience that morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that comes with getting up and moving. Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC hears our La Grande chiropractic patients describe this all the time. Those La Grande knee pain sufferers would be grateful for some relief. What is one way to get some relief? The Mediterranean diet that requires, of all things, eating. Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC asks “How bad can eating be for La Grande knee pain relief?”

La Grande OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

La Grande knee osteoarthritis is ordinary. There are numerous La Grande knee pain sufferers. They are not alone! 240 million people around the world live with osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any La Grande knee osteoarthritis sufferer knows about the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that lessens the quality of daily life. (1) It’s just not much fun. Now a Mediterranean diet could be some fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet includes eating lots of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet permits moderate intake of dairy, poultry and eggs in addition to red wine and olive oil as the central source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Consuming a Mediterranean diet can be quite delicious and adventurous for a recent Mediterranean diet follower.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis entails inflammation in addition to pain. A review of three studies points out that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation because of osteoarthritis fell in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Specifically, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who stuck to a Mediterranean diet show a lessened risk of deteriorating knee pain at 4 years follow up. For those who didn’t experience knee osteoarthritis at the beginning of the 4 years project and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% reduced risk of getting knee osteoarthritis was found. (3) Overall, a higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with better quality of life and less pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
