Headaches and migraines are unwelcome visitors. Headache sufferers are usually quite open
to tips on how to prevent them. Migraine (a primary
headache) sufferers over the age of 50 find themselves members of a global
community with migraine as a foremost cause of
disability. (1) Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC offers
some prevention tips and treatment relief ideas just
for our La Grande headache and migraine sufferers.
DIET AND WEIGHT
A healthy diet feeds the body and the mind. Researchers
have described that migraine triggers come
in a variety of forms - environmental, hormonal, and dietary.
A high-quality diet successfully helps manage
migraine. Further, and more specifically, women
with chronic migraine ate a lower diet
quality than that of women with episodic
migraine. (2) A new study got
even more specific with the kind of diet helpful to
migraine patients, specifically those who
are overweight. A very low-calorie ketogenic diet was revealed
to be preventive of episodic migraines. Effectiveness
was observed within one month of the diet modification.
(3) Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC is not suggesting that any
of our patients try a certain type of
diet now! If a La Grande headache sufferer wishes
to explore a new diet, Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC is here to discuss
and determine which diet (if any special one) is appropriate.
NUTRITION: Vitamin D
In much the same
way, vitamin D supplementation is presented. Vitamin D deficiency has been reported
in 45% to 100% of migraine sufferers. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics
of vitamin D have initiated
a look at including it in the care and prevention of headache and migraine.
One study reported that trial doses of 1000-4000 IU per day reduced
the frequency of migraine including the routine drug
therapy. More research needs to be done,
but vitamin D supplementation seems promising.

individual La Grande chiropractic patient and suggests
supplementation when appropriate.
CHIROPRACTIC AND INTEGRATIVE CARE
Headaches of all varieties – primary
headaches like migraine and tension-type headache – are everyday
complaints brought to the La Grande chiropractor. Research reported
that complementary and integrative medicine - nutrition, movement (yoga),
manual therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage,
biofeedback, meditation, and mind-body strategies – was beneficial.
More specifically, spinal manipulation, chiropractic care,
some supplements, diet change and hydrotherapy are reported helpful
for migraine headache. (4)
