La Grande PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk

Hip fracture and GERD. We often comment that everything in the body is connected. Here is another scenario. GERD or reflux symptoms drive sufferers to seek relief. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are often prescribed for many La Grande reflux sufferers. Sadly, these PPIs may trigger pain elsewhere, specifically the hip for which the risk of fracture is increased, despite the fact that they help with GERD. Your La Grande chiropractor watches closely our patients who develop hip pain, particularly if they are using PPIs, as oftentimes chiropractic treatment does ease hip pain.

PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is elevated for PPI users. Whether users utilize a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is higher while those on a high dose were at even more risk for hip fracture. Researchers warn that doctors and patients must know this in order to be cautious in recommending PPI use long term and be cautious in knowing what the appropriate use of PPIs is so that they do not take it without a full understanding of the need for such use. (1) Researchers in a recent study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk made it very clear: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They open their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is controversial which set them on a course to see for themselves. They found participants who were 40 years of age and over and had been prescribed PPIs for at least 90 days. They then cross referenced any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. They found that fractures developed oftentimes in PPI users than in non-users and that fracture risk associated with PPI use rose the more time they were on them. (2) Avoiding hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT OF HIP PAIN

Chiropractic care of the hip and hip pain can be relieving for hip pain sufferers. As Dr. Robert Hayden described in a recent Prevention magazine article, chiropractic patients who looked for care for spine, hip or shoulder pain said they had less pain after 4 months than those who visited a medical doctor…and the cost of care was less!
