Neck Pain Relief That Starts Beyond Your Neck
If you've dealt with neck pain for a long time, you've probably tried stretching it, kneading it, and resting it. But here's a fact that might surprise you: some of the most useful exercises for a stiff neck focus on its neighbors instead. Your neck works as part of a partnership that includes your jaw above and your upper back below, and two new studies published in 2026 show why that cooperation matters.
DON'T FORGET YOUR JAW
Researchers tracked 62 adults who had dealt with neck pain for more than three months. (1) Everyone performed neck stabilization exercises for six weeks, and half also performed Rocabado exercises, a simple series of easy movements for the jaw, tongue, and head posture. Each group showed improvement. The group that included jaw exercises, though, saw larger gains in how much pressure their neck could handle before it started to hurt, in their ability to sense their head position, and in their balance. Because the jaw and neck share muscles and nerve pathways, it stands to reason that caring for one can benefit the other.
YOUR UPPER BACK HELPS OUT
A second trial of 54 adults introduced thoracic (mid- and upper-back) mobility exercises to regular neck exercises. (2) The extra work didn't ease pain more than neck exercises alone, but it did bring better posture, spinal mobility, neck-related function, and use of the arms and shoulders. A tight upper back can leave your neck carrying an extra load, so loosening it may help everything above move more freely.
THE TAKEAWAY FOR YOU
These were limited, short-duration studies, and in each case, the extra exercises were added to neck exercises rather than taking the place of them. Nonetheless, they're a useful reminder that the root of your discomfort and the route to relief aren't always in the same spot.
