Could a Plant Compound Support Protect Your Spine Discs?
If you've ever coped with disc-related back or neck pain, you know how much your spinal discs are important to your daily well-being and mobility. Now, exciting new research is examining a plant-based compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to slow down disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It's already recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics, but two studies published in 2026 dug deeper into how it may specifically support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin safeguards nucleus pulposus cells — the shock-absorbing cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural buffers. (1) Researchers found that quercetin works by calming down a specific inflammation pathway and strengthening a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this helps disc cells in getting rid of worn-out components and functioning more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration process.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a unique angle. (2) Using cutting-edge genetic analysis, researchers pinpointed that fibrosis — a kind of tissue hardening — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a key part in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin shows promise as an fibrosis-fighting agent, meaning it may help block this scarring process from progressing.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOU
While more research is required before quercetin becomes a standard part of disc care, these findings add to a expanding body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can contribute a helpful role alongside conservative, non-surgical spinal care like chiropractic treatment. At Dr. Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC, we believe in a comprehensive approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's innate healing.
