PHYSICIAN REFERRALS AND BENEFITS
Physician referrals to complementary health approaches (CHAs)
is noteworthy. A survey revealed
that 53.1% of all US physicians recommended
at least one CHA to patients in the past year. The most
common approaches recommended were acupuncture,
yoga, herbs/nonvitamin supplements, osteopathic/chiropractic manipulation, and
massage.
Female physicians were more likely than their male counterparts to refer for massage,
supplements, acupuncture and mind-body therapies. Psychiatrists, OB/GYNs, and
pediatricians were less likely to suggest
chiropractic/osteopathic manipulation than general and family practitioners who
most often recommended manipulation (54%) and massage (52.6%).
(1) And it’s been recorded that first contact
care by a chiropractor for issues like back pain, shoulder and hip pain results in lower cost of care as well as clinically comparable
pain relief and higher satisfaction levels. (2) We love to see this referral among healthcare providers and physicians of all types! La Grande chiropractic patients may well benefit from such cooperation in costs savings,
pain relief, and confidence in the care they receive.

TIP OF THE MONTH: Embrace the Holiday Season!
Just for fun, check out these Danish reports
about the benefits of holiday joy and Santa fun! One analysis of medical doctors whose
November conferences (with coffee) were contrasted to December conferences
(without coffee but with Santa). The Santa visits boosted the happiness
to the level of meetings with coffee. (The authors highlight
that the trial was “kept secret for the participant in accordance
with the tradition of Santa’s elves.”) (3) Another Danish study considered issues like belief in Santa and relationship length that may influence
doctors’ divorce statistics in
the months following the holidays. Divorce rates rose least for general
practitioners whose relationships were also reported to be longer
that other medical subspecialties. Believing
in Santa was helpful only for psychiatrists!
These authors’ bottom-line recommendation was to join in
the Christmas fun but don’t rely on Santa for the present
shopping. Each person must do that for himself/herself! (4)
Bring Santa with you to your next La Grande chiropractic
visit! He will do us all some good!
