La Grande CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Strengthen the Quadratus Lumborum
The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is
a paired muscle on both sides of the abdominal
wall. It’s a deep muscle and usually considered a back muscle as it extends from the 12th rib to
the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae. When
contracted, the quadratus lumborum causes lateral flexion
of the lumbar spine and/or rise of the pelvis. (5) Various bridge-type exercises are being studied as to how they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s dual
layers of muscle in order for it to best contribute to the motor
control of the lumbar pain and prevent back pain. (6) Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC
and you can talk about how your spine may benefit from such
exercise at your next La Grande chiropractic visit to Paulette Hugulet, DC, LLC.
